Tear Stains are extremely common among small dogs. Breeds most affected are Shih Tzu, Bichon Frise, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Chihuahua, Affenpinscher, Australian Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Toy Dog Breeds, and Tea Cup Dogs. Although a dog of any color may have the reddish / brown stains, tear stains are most noticeable on little white dogs.

The causes of tear stains vary from genetics, health, diet, fleas, blocked tear ducts, infections and excessive tearing.  Although in most cases the low grade infection can be treated temporarily by constantly cleaning, it is when treated from within that the Red Yeast infection can be kept under control, otherwise the problem may come back worse than before with added problems.

Many small breed dogs' tear ducts cannot accommodate their excessive tearing, they may be blocked, shallow or closed.  This causes the fur around the eyes to become wet and thus a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast infection (Red Yeast).  This infection causes dirty looking eyes, smells bad, but most importantly may be dangerous to your dog's eyes and health.

Possible Cures for Tear Stains:

The water your pet drinks may be high in minerals - Try switching to bottled water

The eyes may be irritated from the hair around them - cut away all hair near their eyes

Tear stains may be caused by food coloring or additives - stay with natural foods

Sprinkle STAIN-B-GONE on your pet's food once aday and keep the stains away.
